Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries offer many advantages over lead-acid batteries. They have a much faster charging capability, allowing you to utilize even the smallest amount of sunlight without being held back by battery internal resistance. A lead-acid battery, depending on its capacity, will be limited in charging power. With lithium, you can charge at the maximum power the controller can deliver. They are also unbeatable when discharging, easily withstanding very fast discharges.
When comparing the price per available ampere-hour (thanks to the very high depth of discharge of LiFePO4), you’ll find that the cost per usable Ah is only slightly higher than that of lead-acid batteries.
