AESC Starts Mass Production of New 46120 Cylindrical Batteries for BMW's Neue Klasse EVs

AESC 46120 Cylindrical Battery

AESC has begun volume manufacturing of its new 46120 large-format cylindrical cells at its production facility, supporting the BMW Group’s upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform. The 46120 cell has a diameter of 46 mm and a length of 120 mm, delivering approximately 106 Ah per cell and a volumetric energy density above 300 Wh/L. Featuring a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cathode paired with a graphite-silicon composite anode, the cells provide low internal resistance for improved fast-charging performance and a cycle life exceeding 1,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge.

The mass production ramp-up is enabled by AESC’s automated electrode coating and cell assembly lines, which incorporate advanced in-line quality controls and a proprietary dry electrode process that reduces solvent usage. The current production line is capable of turning out more than 300,000 cells per month, with output scheduled to increase as BMW Group scales Neue Klasse production from 2025 onward. Engineered for an 800-volt system architecture, the 46120 cells support charging rates up to 6C, allowing the battery to reach 80% state of charge in under 15 minutes under optimal conditions.

This launch follows the strategic partnership agreement signed in 2022 between AESC and the BMW Group to jointly develop next-generation battery solutions. The new cylindrical cells will be integrated into modules and battery packs optimized for thermal management, safety, and recyclability. AESC is also advancing sustainable practices throughout its supply chain, including the sourcing of low-carbon materials and the implementation of a closed-loop recycling program to recover valuable metals at end of life.

By adding large cylindrical cells to its established pouch cell portfolio, AESC aims to strengthen its position in the global electric vehicle battery market. The collaboration with the BMW Group highlights the two companies’ shared commitment to advancing e-mobility and enhancing driving range, charging convenience, and overall vehicle performance.
