Gotion Power Morocco is set to begin commissioning and start-up of equipment at its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell plant in Kenitra’s Atlantic Free Zone in the week of October 20, the company said. Construction of the site’s buildings and infrastructure has been completed.
The first phase is designed to have 20 GWh of annual production capacity and would involve an investment of about $1.3 billion, based on Gotion’s project information. That 20 GWh number is planned capacity rather than current output. During commissioning, equipment will be brought into service and its performance tested ahead of industrial cell production and a step-by-step ramp-up.
LFP technology offers comparatively competitive costs, long service life and durability, which makes it suited to more affordable electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Financing documents describe an initial 10 GWh project, while Gotion’s broader first-phase description lists 20 GWh.
Batteries from the plant are intended for customers in Morocco and other African markets, along with Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Khalid Qalam, chairman of Gotion Power Morocco, said earlier that sales of assembled batteries were expected before the end of the year. Stable production, customer deliveries and rising output are the next commercial targets.
In a separate move, Gotion and PowerCo announced on September 28 plans for joint ventures in Spain, Slovakia and Morocco covering LFP cell and cathode materials production. The proposed Kenitra cathode materials venture would make cathode material, with Gotion holding 51% and PowerCo 49%; the two partners would manage it jointly. The October commissioning schedule covers cell-production equipment and does not set a start-up date for the cathode materials facility. Volkswagen said its partnership with Gotion is aimed at diversifying supplies and strengthening Europe’s battery industry.
