Global Power Generation (GPG), Naturgy Group’s international renewable energy generation company, has signed a supply agreement with HiTHIUM for a 421MWh battery energy storage system to be installed at the Fraser Coast project in Queensland, Australia. The deal represents HiTHIUM’s first utility-scale partnership with GPG and further strengthens both companies’ involvement in Australia’s expanding energy storage sector.
Under the agreement, HiTHIUM will provide 84 liquid-cooled battery energy storage system units, along with a full service package covering system design, manufacturing, factory acceptance testing, Delivered Duty Paid delivery, commissioning, technical support, and training. According to the company, this integrated delivery model is intended to support utility-scale projects across their entire lifecycle—from engineering and system integration through to commissioning and long-term technical support.
The Fraser Coast BESS is planned as an AC-coupled storage facility connected to the 33kV switchgear of an adjacent solar farm. This setup enables the system to charge from either the solar plant or the grid. The project will also incorporate grid-forming capabilities and is expected to deliver energy arbitrage and Frequency Control Ancillary Services, or FCAS. These functions are designed to improve grid stability, enhance operational flexibility, and help accommodate higher levels of renewable energy penetration.
A HiTHIUM representative noted that Australia is a rapidly growing energy storage market and said the Fraser Coast project illustrates how grid-forming battery storage can contribute to grid stability while supporting the wider integration of renewable energy. The company added that the agreement reflects its long-term commitment to the Australian market.
Australia has experienced rapid growth in utility-scale battery deployment as rising renewable energy adoption increases the need for more flexible and resilient grid infrastructure. The Fraser Coast project adds to a growing pipeline of grid-scale storage assets aimed at delivering energy shifting, frequency regulation, and system stability services.
