LG Energy Solution has finalized a long-term purchase commitment for battery-grade lithium carbonate with Smackover Lithium, a joint venture between Standard Lithium Ltd. and the international energy company Equinor. Under the binding multi-year agreement, Smackover Lithium will deliver 8,000 metric tonnes of lithium carbonate annually over a ten-year period.
The supply will be drawn from the South West Arkansas Project, and LG Energy Solution noted that the material will comply with non-Prohibited Foreign Entity standards—an increasingly critical consideration in the U.S. battery sector. The company said the arrangement reinforces its strategy of securing a dependable local source of cathode material for energy storage batteries in North America, where accelerating electricity demand continues to expand the market.
With seven U.S. production sites, including three standalone facilities, LG Energy Solution said most of its operations are already equipped to manufacture batteries based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry. The addition of Smackover Lithium’s output, according to the company, completes a fully localized chain spanning raw material sourcing through final production.
Smackover Lithium will produce the lithium carbonate using direct lithium extraction and purification technology. The partners described this method as part of an effort to make battery-material supply more sustainable. Direct lithium extraction has gained industry attention because it offers a production route distinct from traditional evaporation-based processes.
LG Energy Solution said the deal bolsters its U.S. supply chain positioning and competitiveness in strategic markets. The company added that it continues to diversify procurement across regions and strengthen supply resilience in response to evolving regulatory environments.
David Park, CEO of Standard Lithium, said the agreement signals the start of what he anticipates will be a lasting partnership focused on American-made, sustainably produced battery-grade lithium carbonate. Kang Yeol Lee, who leads LG Energy Solution’s Procurement Center, said the agreement represents further progress toward a resilient supply chain serving customers in the global energy storage and electric vehicle markets.
