Samsung SDI All-Solid-State Battery

Samsung SDI has officially announced that it plans to begin mass production of its all-solid-state batteries at its Ulsan manufacturing facility in South Korea in the second half of 2027. With this move, the company aims to become the first Korean battery manufacturer to commercialize next-generation solid-state battery technology.

As part of a long-term 14-year investment strategy covering the period from 2026 to 2040, Samsung SDI will commit a total investment of 25 trillion won (around 110 billion yuan) to expand and upgrade its Ulsan and Cheonan facilities. Among this investment, approximately 16 trillion won will be directed toward the Ulsan plant, where Samsung SDI will build production capabilities for all-solid-state batteries, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage applications, and sodium-ion batteries. The remaining 9 trillion won will be invested in transforming the Cheonan facility into a technology validation and development center. Its dry electrode pilot production line has already begun operation, providing a foundation for future improvements in manufacturing efficiency and cost reduction.

To prepare for commercial-scale production, Samsung SDI has completed several rounds of material formulation and manufacturing process verification at its 6,500-square-meter S-Line pilot facility located at the company’s Suwon R&D center. The processes validated through this pilot line will be transferred to the upcoming Ulsan production facility, helping accelerate the transition from pilot manufacturing to large-scale production. From a technical perspective, Samsung SDI is focusing on sulfide-based solid electrolyte technology, with a target energy density exceeding 900 Wh/L.

The company has already delivered prototype solid-state battery cells to potential customers in industries including electric vehicles, embodied artificial intelligence, and humanoid robotics for performance evaluation. Samsung SDI plans to initially commercialize the technology in South Korea and expand production capacity to overseas facilities after confirming the reliability and scalability of its manufacturing model.

The second half of 2027 is expected to become a critical milestone in the global solid-state battery industry. Major competitors, including Toyota, Geely, Chery, and BYD, are also advancing their own solid-state battery programs with similar commercialization timelines. As competition intensifies, solid-state batteries are expected to play an increasingly important role in the next generation of electric mobility and energy storage technologies.
