SAMSUNG SDI and KGM Partner on Next-Generation EV Battery Pack

SAMSUNG SDI revealed today that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KG Mobility (KGM), a leading Korean automobile manufacturer, to co-develop next-generation battery pack technologies for electric vehicles.

The signing ceremony was attended by key executives from both companies, including SAMSUNG SDI’s Ick Kyu Choi, Head of Mobile & Power Battery Business (Executive Vice President), and Han Jae Cho, Head of Marketing (Executive Vice President). Representing KGM were Jeong Hyun Kwak, Chief Strategy Officer (President), and Yong Il Kwon, General Headquarter Director (Executive Director).

Under the agreement, the companies will center their efforts on battery pack technologies utilizing SAMSUNG SDI’s 46-series cylindrical battery cells, while also broadening their collaboration to advance next-generation battery pack development. The battery packs resulting from this partnership are anticipated to be integrated into KGM’s future electric vehicle models.

Furthermore, the two companies intend to establish a strategic partnership by exchanging insights on mid- to long-term global battery market strategies and engaging in joint research and development initiatives.

SAMSUNG SDI’s 46-series cylindrical battery delivers high energy density, supporting both extended driving range and fast-charging capabilities. Designed with enhanced safety and durability, the battery ensures reliable performance across diverse driving conditions.

Featuring high-capacity, high-nickel NCA cathodes and SAMSUNG SDI’s proprietary Silicon Carbon Nanocomposite (SCN) anodes, the battery effectively minimizes swelling while extending battery life. Its tabless design reduces internal resistance and optimizes current flow, thereby boosting high-power output and fast-charging performance. Improved thermal management and refined manufacturing processes further contribute to heightened safety and quality reliability.

Through this collaboration, SAMSUNG SDI emphasized the strong performance and quality of its 46-series cylindrical batteries and expects the partnership to drive future growth in its battery business.

“This collaboration reaffirms the distinct technological competitiveness of our 46-series cylindrical batteries in both the Korean and global EV markets,” stated a SAMSUNG SDI representative. “We will continue to reinforce our technology leadership in the next-generation global battery industry.”
