BYD is set to reach 10,000 flash charging stations in China on August 28, a milestone that puts the company halfway toward its goal of 20,000 stations by the end of the year. The company said Thursday on Weibo that a ceremony marking the occasion will be held at 9:00 a.m. Beijing time at its Longhua flagship flash charging station in Shenzhen.
The rapid expansion comes as BYD works to build out its own charging network alongside the introduction of vehicles equipped with its second-generation Blade Battery. The pace has been particularly fast in recent months: the company had 5,000 stations in operation on April 1, and its most recent disclosure showed 7,018 stations as of June 30. Reaching 10,000 by late August means the network will have doubled in under five months.
Even so, hitting the full-year target will require adding another 10,000 stations in roughly four months, which translates to about 80 new stations per day from August 29 through the end of the year. That would mark a further step up in the speed of deployment.
The stations use BYD’s next-generation flash charger, introduced in March, which is rated at up to 1,500 kW through a single connector, with two connectors per unit. When combined with the second-generation Blade Battery, the system can charge a vehicle from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, according to the company.
Of the 20,000 planned stations, BYD intends to develop 18,000 in partnership with Chinese charging-network operators, while the remaining 2,000 are designated for highway locations. The company also signed a framework agreement in June with Sinopec to tap into the energy company’s network of more than 30,000 integrated energy service stations and speed up the rollout.
The flash charging stations will be open to electric vehicles from other brands as well, though actual charging speeds will depend on each vehicle’s capabilities. BYD also plans to bring the flash charging network to overseas markets by the end of 2026. It has already deployed its first stations in the United Kingdom, where it aims to install 300 by year-end.
