CATL will license battery-pack technology to BME and equip the Egyptian manufacturer with production machinery and workforce training, enabling BME to assemble and manufacture battery packs inside Egypt, the two sides said under a newly signed cooperation agreement.
The Chinese battery company announced the deal on Wednesday. It builds on an earlier plan by the pair to collaborate on purchasing battery cells, with the broader aim of boosting Egypt’s local battery-pack output.
BME will alone finance and construct the plant. Its first-phase target is 1 GWh of annual output, focused mainly on batteries for heavy commercial vehicles.
Longer term, BME envisions expanding capacity to 5 GWh. The product scope could then widen to include battery packs for passenger vehicles as well as energy storage systems for solar and wind applications.
MCV, an Egyptian commercial vehicle manufacturer, and Auto D, an automotive solutions provider, jointly established BME. The partnership therefore brings local automotive industry resources into the project.
CATL said BME will use its technology and equipment to supply Egyptian automakers directly, helping to address a missing link in the country’s domestic battery-pack manufacturing sector.
The announcement dealt with local battery-pack assembly and manufacturing. It made no mention of local battery cell production, and it left both the plant’s investment amount and its production schedule undisclosed.
For CATL, the tie-up is another step in its push to grow commercial vehicle battery operations abroad. The company aims to support local supply capacity by giving partners technology, equipment and training.
CATL had introduced its Tectrans II commercial vehicle battery solution on September 14 at IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany. The heavy truck version, when configured with the highest capacity, can deliver a range of up to 1,000 kilometers.
While at the event, CATL also signed a memorandum of understanding with DHL Group. Their collaboration is to develop green freight corridors across Europe and to work with automakers and other partners on purpose-built electric vehicles.
CATL’s global lead in EV batteries remains intact. According to South Korean market researcher SNE Research, its installed battery volume in the first seven months of 2026 rose 26.6% from a year earlier to 289.6 GWh, corresponding to a 39.9% market share.
