At an event held on August 17 in Ningde, Fujian province, where the company is headquartered, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) declared that its core operations had become carbon neutral by the end of 2025. The battery maker also unveiled, for the first time, a detailed plan to extend carbon neutrality to its entire value chain by 2035.
CATL described itself as the only battery manufacturer globally to reach carbon neutrality in core operations while shipping batteries at a terawatt-hour scale. The company explained that “core operations” cover its own production and operating activities, with factory electricity and heat as the main emission sources, and emphasized that the difficulty of meeting this target grows with manufacturing scale.
By the close of 2025, 20 of CATL’s battery plants had received ISO 14068-1 certification as zero-carbon factories, and all electricity used in its core operations came from zero-carbon sources. The company produced 748 GWh of batteries in 2025, with sales 2.3 times higher than in 2022.
Since 2023, CATL has consumed more than 18 billion kWh of zero-carbon electricity. Compared with 2022, energy use per unit of output at its battery production sites dropped 28% in 2025, while carbon intensity fell by about 77% over the same period. These improvements, the company said, have cut cumulative emissions by more than 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Looking ahead, CATL identified its supply chain as the biggest remaining obstacle, noting that it accounts for over 80% of product lifecycle carbon emissions—more than five times the emissions from its own operations. To tackle this, CATL has developed a full-chain carbon data traceability platform spanning mineral extraction, raw-material refining, material synthesis, and component manufacturing. The platform builds on the Carbon Chain Management System introduced in 2022.
The company reported that it has completed calculations using actual carbon data from more than 100 core tier-one suppliers and has built more than 1,000 product and raw-material models. It also plans to publish Green Procurement Guidelines and has launched a Zero-Carbon Supply Chain Empowerment Initiative involving 30 core suppliers.
CATL remains the world’s largest EV battery supplier, with a 39.9% global market share in the first half of 2026, according to SNE Research.
