Samsung SDI Vows to Protect Its Prismatic Battery Patent at InterBattery 2026

Samsung SDI is drawing a hard line when it comes to protecting its prismatic battery technology—and it wants the industry to take notice. As competition in the sector intensifies, the company says it will begin strictly enforcing its intellectual property rights.

Speaking at InterBattery 2026 in Seoul, Joo Yong-lak, executive vice president and head of Samsung SDI’s research center, made it clear that unauthorized use of the company’s patented prismatic cell innovations won’t be overlooked. “We’re watching the market closely,” he said, pointing to growing interest from both battery manufacturers and automakers entering the prismatic space.

Joo stressed that mastering prismatic cell technology is no small feat—it requires deep, integrated expertise spanning materials, design, module assembly, process engineering, and large-scale production. “You can’t shortcut your way to that level of know-how,” he added.

Samsung SDI’s patent portfolio tells the story of that long-term commitment. Since its first U.S. patent filing for prismatic cells back in 1997, the company has secured roughly 1,200 registered patents in the U.S. alone. By comparison, top rivals in China and Japan each hold around 600, while other Korean players lag far behind with just 30 to 40. For Joo, those numbers are proof of sustained R&D investment.

At this year’s exhibition, Samsung SDI also unveiled “PrismStack,” a new brand umbrella for its prismatic offerings. The lineup emphasizes modular design, next-gen electrode coatings, and improved thermal control—tailored for EVs, energy storage systems, and premium consumer devices. The branding push, according to company officials, reflects a broader strategy to stand out through material innovation and differentiated design.

Industry watchers read Joo’s comments as more than routine posturing—they see a deliberate signal to up-and-coming rivals. With a formidable patent wall and fresh momentum in product development, Samsung SDI is making it known: it built this technology from the ground up, and it has no intention of giving it away.
