Dubai, UAE, August 22, 2025 – Sungrow, a globally leading provider of inverters and energy storage systems, introduced its latest innovation—the 1+X 2.0 Modular Inverter—at the 2025 MEA PV & ESS Summit in Dubai. Engineered for harsh desert conditions, the new inverter supports stable full-load operation at temperatures up to 52°C and offers a scalable capacity ranging from 780kW to 9.375MW. With major enhancements in system availability, safety, and grid compatibility, the 1+X 2.0 establishes new standards for utility-scale solar projects across the Middle East and Africa.
- Stable Operation at 52°C, Reliable Long-Term Performance
Summer temperatures in the Middle East frequently surpass 52°C. Utility-scale PV plants generate substantial heat, raising internal temperatures further and creating variability across array blocks. Conventional inverters often experience derating or reduced lifespan under these conditions.
Sungrow’s 1+X 2.0 tackles this with high-performance components, efficient heat exchangers, and built-in safety margins across critical parts. Its innovative dual-duct cooling system isolates hot and cold airflows to prevent thermal interference, while redundant thermal management ensures continuous full-power output.
The inverter has undergone rigorous high-temperature, irradiation, and wind-disturbance testing, validating its performance even at 52°C.
- IP66 Protection Withstands Sandstorms
Featuring a fully sealed design, high-grade protective materials, and a self-cleaning air duct, the 1+X 2.0 maintains clean internal components during extended sandstorms. It passed 100 days of on-site sandstorm testing, including 45 days of severe conditions, emerging dust-free with consistent power output—proving its reliability in sandy, dusty environments.
- Compact Module, Large Capacity
The 1+X 2.0 offers enhanced modularity over its predecessor. Each 780kW unit can be paralleled to scale from 780kW up to 9.375MW, delivering flexibility for a wide range of project requirements.
- Plug-and-Play Design Cuts Maintenance Time by 70%
A split modular design isolates key components (IGBTs, capacitors) in an upper module that weighs only 105kg—lighter than most string inverters—enabling easy handling and replacement.
Field engineers can replace a module in as little as one hour. Coupled with an intelligent diagnostics system, the inverter enables real-time fault detection, reduces manual troubleshooting, and speeds up repairs.
Most PV system faults originate in DC circuits, potentially leading to short-circuits, arcing, or fires. The 1+X 2.0 incorporates an AI-driven DC safety system:
- Dual DC Arc Protection
When an arc is detected, the combiner box disconnects the faulty string within 40 milliseconds, preventing fire ignition. Inverter cluster control simultaneously shuts down other combiners in the same block to avoid fault propagation.
- Terminal Overheating Protection
A high-precision sensor network monitors terminal temperatures in real time. Abnormal readings trigger immediate disconnection, eliminating fire risks from poor electrical contact.
- Pyro Fuse Protection
Detects 15 types of faults (short-circuit, arc, overload, etc.) and disconnects within 2ms, preventing equipment damage.
- Diesel-Free Commissioning via Microgrid Capability
The 1+X 2.0 can create microgrids within or across blocks, supplying power for construction and commissioning without diesel generators. A 1GW project in the Middle East using this technology achieved grid connection 30 days early, generating an additional $2.9 million in revenue and significantly reducing Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE).
- Improved System Economics
Larger block designs, longer string inputs, and MPLC communication help reduce upfront investment. A 1GW plant can save up to $3.24 million in CAPEX. Intelligent diagnostics, simplified maintenance, and night-time MV disconnection also considerably lower OPEX.
Equipped with Sungrow’s solar grid-forming technology, the inverter operates seamlessly in both strong and weak grids. It supports DC- and AC-coupled solar-plus-storage configurations, easing grid integration. The DC-coupled option is 5% more efficient and reduces initial investment by over 10% compared to AC-coupled alternatives. With 100% grid-forming capability based on AC capacity, the system performs as a true solar-plus-storage generator.
Having delivered over 25GW of solar projects throughout the Middle East and Africa, Sungrow has built a strong regional presence over the past ten years. The introduction of the 1+X 2.0 Modular Inverter reinforces the company’s commitment to advancing the MEA’s energy transition through innovation, reliability, and sustainability.
