
Sungrow and ERS Energy have brought their joint energy storage work in Malaysia and the Philippines to a combined 1 GWh, a figure the partners described as a new benchmark for their collaboration. The milestone was marked with a signing ceremony and linked to their efforts to meet evolving grid requirements and support renewable energy growth in the region.
The Philippines hosts one of the two flagship projects: a four-hour, 556 MWh battery storage installation being built for ACEN. ERS Energy is once again serving as EPC contractor. A central element of the facility is its grid-forming capability, designed to actively support grid voltage and frequency. The project will also take part in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, allowing stored electricity to be charged and dispatched in line with market conditions. According to the companies, this operating model should make better use of stored power and help deliver a more reliable and responsive electricity system.
In Malaysia, the two companies are developing the four-hour, 441 MWh MyBeST project in Bahau, with ERS Energy acting as EPC contractor. The scheme forms part of a national large-scale battery energy storage program led by Suruhanjaya Tenaga, the Energy Commission of Malaysia. As the country adds more renewable generation, the battery system is expected to strengthen grid stability, help keep supply and demand in balance, and support greater solar integration. By charging when renewable output is high and discharging when needed, it can also reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking generation.
Taken together, the two projects show how energy storage can be tailored to different market needs—enhancing grid flexibility in Malaysia and enabling market participation and grid-forming services in the Philippines. Sungrow said it will continue working with regional partners to provide energy storage solutions that expand renewable integration and improve power system resilience across Southeast Asia.
