210Ah Sodium Ion Batteries Shipped to Canada

Sodium-ion battery technology is one of the most well-developed battery technologies in the last three years, especially from 2021 to 2022, when the cost of lithium batteries was very high. At that time, the price of Li2CO3 reached a historic high of nearly US$85,000 per ton, which caused the price of lithium batteries to increase by 50–55%. Customers who purchased electric vehicles equipped with 60–80 kWh lithium battery packs had to pay an extra US$3,500 to US$4,500.

The price of sodium-ion batteries was 50% lower than that of lithium batteries at that time, and they were considered a good alternative to lithium batteries. Leading lithium battery manufacturers such as CATL and BYD were researching and developing sodium-ion technology and investing in facilities to produce sodium-ion batteries to hedge against the high cost of Li2CO3.

The price of Li2CO3 has decreased rapidly since 2023, which has caused the price of lithium batteries to drop by over 35%. Now the price of sodium-ion batteries is very similar to that of lithium (LiFePO4) batteries.

3.1V 210Ah sodium ion battery packing details

The weight of a 3.2V 314Ah LiFePO4 battery is 5.6 kg, so its energy density is 180 Wh/kg. The weight of a 3.1V 210Ah sodium-ion battery is 4.7 kg, and its energy density is 140 Wh/kg. Because the energy density of lithium (LiFePO4) batteries is around 28% higher than that of sodium batteries, more and more energy storage systems and electric vehicles are using lithium (LiFePO4) batteries at present. However, sodium batteries still have some advantages over LiFePO4 batteries, as follows:

The price of sodium-ion batteries is lower than that of LiFePO4 batteries.

The working temperature range of sodium-ion batteries is wider than that of LiFePO4 batteries.

Sodium batteries are safer than LiFePO4 batteries.

The thermal runaway temperature of sodium batteries is much higher than that of LiFePO4 batteries.

The most important, though not the last, advantage of sodium-ion batteries is that Na+ is much cheaper and more readily available from the Earth than Li+.
