BYD has wrapped up work on its 2,000th highway flash-charging location in China, securing a construction milestone about three months before its original year-end deadline and just ahead of a major holiday travel wave.
The automaker disclosed the achievement Thursday through its official Weibo account, portraying it as a notable advance in its “Flash Charging China” campaign. A day earlier, BYD had hinted that the completion was imminent.
The goal belonged to a roadmap BYD introduced on March 5: 20,000 flash-charging stations across China by the end of 2026, with 2,000 earmarked for expressways. By finishing the highway portion early, BYD adds charging capacity before the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays—periods when long charging lines have repeatedly frustrated Chinese EV owners on extended journeys.
Those 2,000 highway sites span close to one-third of the country’s highway service areas, with chargers placed an average of just over 100 kilometers apart, according to earlier reporting by BYD.
The expressway locations form only one layer of BYD’s wider flash-charging footprint. As of Aug. 28, the company had installed 10,000 such stations in China and reiterated plans to reach 20,000 by December. By Sept. 24, the nationwide total had climbed to 11,586 stations, touching 341 cities.
Its earlier blueprint assigned the other 18,000 stations—those outside the highway program—to joint development with charging-network operators. Overseas, BYD is aiming for 6,000 flash-charging stations.
Unveiled in March, BYD’s latest flash chargers can pump out up to 1,500 kW through a single connector. When matched with the company’s second-generation Blade Battery, BYD says the system needs five minutes to move from 10% to 70% and nine minutes to reach 97% from 10% at normal temperatures.
EVs from rival brands may use the network as well, but their real charging rates are constrained by their own hardware. As a result, not every model can hit the speeds BYD promotes.
Figures BYD released on Aug. 28 showed the network had supplied 210 million kWh in total and drawn more than 1.83 million users, with other-brand owners making up almost a third of that group.
The buildout is taking shape as Chinese carmakers ratchet up their rivalry in ultrafast charging. On Sept. 23, Geely Auto introduced its Geely Smart Charging system and fifth-generation chargers.
Geely’s fifth-generation hardware peaks at 2,250 kW, higher than the 1,500 kW per connector ceiling for BYD’s flash chargers. In Geely’s tests, the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001, both using its Shendun Golden Battery, went from 10% to 70% in four minutes and 30 seconds.
