Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has entered into a cooperation pact with Eastern European renewables firm Solarpro covering 2 gigawatt-hours of its Tener Sodium energy storage systems. Under the deal, the two parties plan to install central and eastern Europe’s first utility-scale sodium-ion storage facility later this year, marking CATL’s second sodium-ion order in the region this month.
Earlier this month, CATL signed a memorandum of understanding with a European energy integrator to deliver 5 GWh of sodium-ion storage units across western Europe, with supply set to start in 2027. The latest agreement with Solarpro builds on a partnership established in 2024, when the companies deployed a 150-megawatt-hour liquid-cooled storage system in Bulgaria. In May, they linked a 602-megawatt-hour lithium-ion system to the national grid, increasing Bulgaria’s overall storage capacity by around 10%.
The Tener Sodium energy storage solution, formally launched on June 22, delivers a cycle life of up to 15,000 cycles and a service life of 25 to 30 years. It maintains 92% of its capacity at temperatures as low as –20 °C, making it well suited to winter conditions in eastern European markets. Each unit has a rated capacity of more than 30 MWh, supports discharge durations of four to eight hours, and is engineered to fit into the same footprint as existing lithium-ion systems for straightforward integration.
CATL intends to begin initial deliveries in China in September, aiming for cumulative shipments of 1 GWh by end‑2026. International commercial shipments are scheduled to start in June 2027. Sodium-ion technology has become a fresh growth driver for CATL: earlier this year, the company secured a three‑year supply contract for 60 GWh with a Chinese energy‑storage integrator and announced a ¥5 billion investment to build 40 GWh of new sodium-ion production capacity in Fujian province.
CATL’s founder has forecast that low‑cost sodium-ion batteries could eventually displace 30% to 40% of the current battery market. The company also expects that between 10,000 and 20,000 electric vehicles will be powered by its sodium-ion cells by the close of this year.
