Chinese battery giant CATL has announced that it plans to begin small-scale trial production of solid-state battery (SSB) cells in 2027, aligning with a similar development schedule recently revealed by competitor BYD. Widely regarded as one of the most promising next-generation battery technologies, solid-state batteries are expected to deliver higher energy density, lighter weight and enhanced safety compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries.
During a mid-year investor Q&A session, CATL representatives stated that the company’s solid-state battery research is currently among the industry’s leading efforts. The company also revealed plans to establish pilot production lines by 2027. However, CATL executives have taken a cautious approach toward commercialization, explaining that solid-state battery technology is still at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4, meaning that cells are mainly undergoing laboratory validation. CATL Chief Scientist Wu Kai noted that the company aims to advance the technology to TRL 7 or 8 by 2027, allowing real-world testing and evaluation alongside pilot-scale manufacturing.
Meanwhile, BYD has also accelerated its solid-state battery development. The automaker recently obtained six new patents related to solid-state battery materials, production techniques and quality management. Its technology focuses on a dual-electrolyte cathode design that combines solid halide and sulfide electrolytes to replace conventional liquid electrolyte systems. Similar to CATL, BYD is also targeting 2027 for initial trial production of solid-state battery cells.
CATL Chairman Dr. Robin Zeng has previously suggested that early commercial applications of solid-state batteries will likely be limited to premium electric vehicles priced above 250,000 yuan (around $37,000) due to initial technical and manufacturing challenges. According to earlier market research released by CATL, widespread adoption of solid-state batteries—defined as reaching annual production for one million vehicles—may not happen until after 2030.
As China’s largest battery manufacturer, CATL reported installed battery capacity of 32.59 GWh in June 2026 and maintains approximately 43.2% of the domestic market share. The global race to commercialize solid-state battery technology has attracted increasing attention from battery companies and automakers of all sizes, as they compete to secure a position in what many industry experts consider the “holy grail” of next-generation EV energy storage.
