Gotion Begins Delivering Unified Battery Cells to Multiple VW Platforms

On November 20, Gotion held a ceremony in Hefei to mark the mass production and delivery of its standard battery cell—known as the Unified Cell (UC). This achievement signals the full-scale production launch following a five-year strategic partnership between Volkswagen Group, its battery company PowerCo, and Gotion. From 2026 through 2032, Gotion will supply Volkswagen Group with high-performance LFP cells and other standardized battery products.

The event was attended by key executives including Thomas Schmall, Volkswagen Group’s Chief Technology Officer; Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo; Dr. Günther Mendl, Head of Volkswagen Group’s Center of Excellence for Batteries; Olaf Korzinovski, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group China; as well as Gotion’s Chairman Li Zhen, Executive President Wang Qisui, and President of Europe and Africa Business, Cai Yi.

Unified Cell Production Supports Multiple Volkswagen Platforms

That morning, senior management from Volkswagen Group, Volkswagen China, PowerCo, and the Battery Center of Excellence gathered at Gotion’s UC facility in Hefei. In a symbolic gesture, guests inserted the first cells into an activation device, triggering a stopwatch to speed up—officially marking the start of mass production and delivery of the jointly developed Unified Cell.

Dr. Zhang Hongli, Gotion Board Member and Chairman of the Hefei Base, noted that batch deliveries of the UC have been gradually rolling out this year. “Five years of collaboration have enabled us to build a complete innovation system and a smart manufacturing ecosystem around the standard cell. The cells delivered meet internationally advanced levels in energy density, safety performance, and cost efficiency, allowing for deeper cooperation across the entire value chain—from technology integration and capacity alignment to market supply.”

Gotion is now working closely with multiple Volkswagen and PowerCo project teams to advance mass production and delivery. During the event, Gotion also showcased a battery pack system built on the unified cell platform. In addition to supplying cells, Gotion will gradually provide complete battery products for multiple Volkswagen vehicle platforms.

Five Years of Partnership: Standard Cell Cuts Costs by Up to 50%

Also on the 20th, Thomas Schmall and other executives toured the unified cell production line, accompanied by Chairman Li Zhen. From forming a strategic partnership in 2020, earning dual Volkswagen lab certifications in 2023, securing an overseas UC supply contract, receiving the “Best Supplier” award in 2024, to jointly presenting unified cells and battery packs at international exhibitions in 2025—Gotion and Volkswagen have consistently deepened their cooperation.

The unified cell is a highly compatible, standardized battery solution. A single cell format supports different chemistries and fits multiple vehicle platforms. Its key strengths include integration efficiency, fast-charging capability, strong safety protection, and excellent low-temperature performance, earning it multiple Volkswagen designations.

Gotion Emerges as a Pillar of Volkswagen’s Global Battery Strategy

Volkswagen Group CTO Thomas Schmall commented: “Today, the collaboration among Volkswagen Group, Gotion, and PowerCo has reached a new phase. The Unified Cell is a global technology platform designed for nearly all Volkswagen brands and markets, enabling both innovation and economies of scale. With Gotion’s LFP unified cells now being produced in Hefei and PowerCo’s Salzgitter plant in Germany starting NCM unified cell production this December, we are prepared to supply next-generation, highly competitive battery technologies across all Volkswagen brands. This makes Gotion a cornerstone of our global ‘make-and-buy’ battery strategy.”

Olaf Korzinovski, Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group China, added: “Our partnership with Gotion and PowerCo began with a shared vision—to develop high-quality, cost-competitive batteries for the future of electric mobility. Today, that vision has become reality. Next, we will focus on scaling production capacity and building a successful future together.”

Gotion Chairman Li Zhen expressed sincere gratitude to Volkswagen for the collaborative journey. He emphasized that the partnership is built on shared values and a common vision, while Volkswagen’s strategic investment has accelerated Gotion’s global expansion. With the official delivery of the unified cell, industrial collaboration enters a new stage. Starting from mass production, Gotion will continue advancing technology to ensure the cells remain safe, reliable, and a benchmark for partnership—powering Volkswagen’s electric transformation forward.
