Gotion High-Tech has essentially wrapped up the design phase for its 2-gigawatt-hour all-solid-state battery mass production line, marking a significant step forward as the company pushes to commercialize its next-generation technology. The Hefei-based firm shared the update in response to an investor query, though it held back on detailed specs. Next up is expected to be the start of construction on the new facility.
The news follows Gotion’s earlier progress with its 0.2-GWh pilot line for the Gemstone all-solid-state battery, which reportedly achieved a yield rate above 90% and energy density around 300 watt-hours per kilogram. To tackle lingering technical hurdles, Gotion has also strengthened its partnership with BASF, formalizing a joint effort to develop high-performance core materials for solid-state cells.
Gotion’s push into solid-state tech marks a strategic shift from its earlier focus on conventional lithium-ion chemistries. Once a leader in the domestic battery space, the company has since fallen behind rivals CATL and BYD in the global EV battery market. According to SNE Research, CATL and BYD held 39.2% and 16.4% of the global market in 2025, respectively, while Gotion ranked fifth with a 4.5% share.
The company first unveiled its Gemstone solid-state battery at its 13th technology conference in May 2024 and is now racing to scale up production. Several other major Chinese battery makers have also set their sights on small-batch solid-state production around 2027, reflecting a broader industry shift toward safer, higher-energy-density cells.
On the financial side, Gotion has signaled a sharp rise in net income for 2025, supported in part by around RMB 1.7 billion in gains from its stake in Chery following the automaker’s Hong Kong listing. That boost could help fund the company’s push into next-generation battery tech.
